ARTIST STATEMENT

My drawings and paintings describe the ambiguous nature of memories, spirituality, and insomnia. I wonder about a quiet, dark house and a dim light under the door. The streetlamp coming in through the blinds, the fuzzy shadow at the edge of the room. That static texture you get when your eyes try to understand what they're looking at without enough information. In the long stretch between wake and sleep, I let moments from days or years apart blend together and find some vague understanding in the way they intersect. I work with oil, acrylic, colored pencil, and pen to find strange lighting, a soft color field, or a shifting atmosphere. I use familiar symbols to recall the feeling of transience and loss: doors, windows, reflections, a glowing light, a figure fading into its surroundings. I allow my work to remain somewhat inconclusive, like the blurry edges of an awareness I can’t quite hold onto.
